7 Movies to Watch With Your Roommate to Really Bond

By Lorena Roberts on December 20, 2017

These days pretty much everyone has Netflix. And whether or not you’re willing to admit it, you sit around in your spare time and binge-watch all your favorite shows — don’t you? It’s okay. We all do it. You probably aren’t much of a millennial if you don’t. Hopefully, you and your roommates don’t argue over what show to watch, and if you embark on the journey of watching one together, here’s hoping one of you doesn’t secretly skip ahead.

If you’re looking for a way to bond with your roommates without having to do too much talking, pop some popcorn and snuggle in for a movie night. Decide what genre you’re in the mood for and roll the dice. To get you started, here are seven movies you absolutely must watch with your roommate(s).

1. Bridesmaids:

Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy star in this hilariously witty chick flick. There’s no better way to spend an evening with your girls than with a bucket of popcorn and this comedy. Honestly, there is no better choice. No matter how many times you watch it, it always ends with your sides hurting so badly you’re sore the next day.

The first time I watched this movie, I was on a plane. I remember feeling ridiculously awkward as I laughed (out loud) at McCarthy’s constant comic lines.

2. Dodgeball:

It’s one of those classics that you’ll memorize all the lines to with your roomies and repeat them to each other for weeks to follow. If you’re looking for a true bonding movie, this is it.

Starring Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn, this is one of their best movies together. Lately, they haven’t been doing so hot. If you want to watch them hilariously interact in a movie that’ll make you bust a gut with laughter, this is the perfect pick.

3. Made of Honor:

Patrick Dempsey is probably one of the cutest movie stars in his age bracket. So if you have something better to do than hang with your homies and watch him fall in love with his best friend (spoiler alert), then…well, let’s be honest. You don’t have anything better to do.

Michelle Monaghan co-stars with Dempsey. Her role in this film is easy to relate to. You and your roommates will find a kinship in how dreamy Dr. McDreamy really is.

4. 13 Going on 30

Mark Ruffalo and Jennifer Garner are the perfect love birds for this movie. If you’re up for a night of roller coaster emotions with your roomies, this is the perfect pick. IMDb gives this film a 6.1/10, a pretty stand-up score against others. It’s not bad for a chick flick — don’t feel guilty for indulging in it more than a few times.

5. Mean Girls

Classic flick for a girls’ night in. No homework, a fireplace, and your favorite mix of salty/sweet snacks. That’s all you need to enjoy Lindsay Lohan and the rest of her posse. Mean Girls is the classic representation of what goes on in every high school across the country. Our culture teaches girls to care more about their looks and sex than their potential to change the world. Reminisce about your own high school days as Lohan navigates a world that’s all new to her.

6. How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days

Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey are the perfect match for each other in this romantic comedy. You’ll enjoy watching them spat and fall in love. You’ll enjoy the scenery and the comic lines. And you’ll especially enjoy looking at McConaughey’s face for an hour and fifty-six minutes.

Even though it was released in the early 2000′s, it’ll be worth watching until we’re no longer using DVD players.

7. The Devil Wears Prada

If you don’t love Anne Hathaway by the end of the movie, you’ll know you’re soulless. Meryl Streep is fantastic and you’ll appreciate the versatility she shows in her acting ability through this movie. You and your girls will have a blast watching Hathaway experience (yet another) makeover. She’ll become the fierce, fashion-forward woman we all want to be.

In-between your movie marathon…

Leave lots of room for laughs together. If you need to stalk each other back to 2008 and laugh until your sides hurt, do it. Tell all of your worst first date experiences and maybe even the best. Share your first impressions of each other, or play Monopoly from start to finish. Take note of things that make your roommate laugh, you’ll appreciate your closeness someday.

It might be wise to start keeping a list of all the movies you’ve seen together. Maybe all the movies you want to see together? And cross them off the list as you go. Here’s to hoping you and your roommates find some similarities and you truly bond over some of the movies I’ve suggested.
