Music to Help Survive School Stress

By Ashley Paskill on October 20, 2017

School can be really stressful at times. Between jobs, schoolwork, friends and family, and extracurricular activities, students today have so much going on in their lives that they have to juggle. This level of stress can take a toll on mental health. However, music has a way to distract listeners from their daily lives, even if for a moment, and change the listener’s mood. The songs below are perfect examples of songs that can give students an extra boost when life gets tough.

1. “St. Elmo’s Fire,” John Parr

Although this song came out before most current college students were born, it is a great feel-good, confidence-boosting song. It is upbeat and positive with the lyrics to match. The lyrics speak about a new outlook on life and being willing to push to get things done. Many students get trapped in a mindset of not being able to get through their stress, but seeing themselves as strong enough to power through can be life-changing.

2. “We Will Rock You,” Queen

This classic song is often heard at sporting events, and with great reason. The song is simple yet powerful, the vocals booming strongly and the lyrics talking about overcoming and being victorious in a situation. The song is usually paired with “We Are the Champions” by the same band. Both songs have the power to inspire students to push through and to visualize the victory of being successful.

3. “Shake it Off,” Taylor Swift

Sometimes, students deal with the stress of people telling them that they are not good enough or that they are not doing enough in their lives. The student knows that he/she is doing what needs to be done, but others may not see these things as productive or as good steps towards a career. This song inspires students to not listen to anyone else and not to compare their lives to others.

4.  “Born This Way,” Lady Gaga

It is easy for students to compare themselves to other students who may seem to be better at the major or who seem to be doing more. However, this song is all about celebrating who people are naturally. It is inspiring for students, telling them that they are good enough, beautiful as they are, and will succeed. It can be difficult to forget these things, but it is true. Students would not be students if they were not good enough to be where they are.

5. “Fight Song,” Rachel Platten

Life can be difficult at times, knocking students down with stress and hardship. Students are strong enough to overcome whatever obstacles may come their way. Students have the power to make a difference and to do more than they, and those who love them, ever envisioned. They have strength to accomplish their goals and the fire they need to keep their energy high and their will to succeed alive.
