Get Involved in Phi Kappa Phi's Annual Book Drive Competition

By Francine Fluetsch on February 4, 2017

What do you get when you combine some friendly competition with lots of books that are going towards a good cause? You get the annual book drive competition from the honor society of Phi Kappa Phi!

Phi Kappa Phi is the nation’s oldest and most selective all-discipline honor society, and they are using their book drive competition to circulate the joy of reading and promote literacy in the communities served by Phi Kappa Phi’s chapters. This is a fun way to get all the chapters involved and to keep reading alive.

According to this press release, interested chapters can participate in the competition by hosting a drive (between February 1 and April 30), where they collect books or funds that will go towards literacy materials.

Of course, no competition would be complete without a prize to be competing for. The chapter that collects the most books or donations will receive a “Little Free Library” to be placed at a location of their choice, which will really benefit the community and let the power of reading grow. The winning chapter will also receive $150 to use in order to design and personalize the library. What a fun prize! Keep up on social media to see how creative they get with their own little library.

This is the fourth year that this competition has taken place, and so far, over 30,000 books have been donated both locally and abroad. It’s the little things like this that can make a difference. Organizations that have received donated books as part of the competition include schools, libraries, hospitals, correctional centers, tutoring and mentoring programs, shelters, and more.

“The book drive competition is a fitting extension of the Phi Kappa Phi mission,” said Society Executive Director Dr. Mary Todd in the release. “The competition provides an opportunity for our chapters to engage in service to others while enabling access to resources and opportunities that promote lifelong learning.”

Keep up the good work, Phi Kappa Phi! This is some friendly competition that we can definitely get behind.

A little bit more about Phi Kappa Phi: If you are invited into this honor society, it is no small matter. Membership is by invitation only to the top 10 percent of seniors and graduate students and 7.5 percent of juniors. Faculty, professional staff, and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction also qualify.

The Society’s mission is “To recognize and promote academic excellence in all fields of higher education and to engage the community of scholars in service to others.”
